These exams are crucial for detecting and preventing various eye diseases and conditions. Here are some of the most common tests you can expect during a comprehensive eye exam at our storied optometric clinic.

Visual Acuity Test

The visual acuity test is the part of the eye exam most people are familiar with. You’ll read from an eye chart which helps determine how well you see at various distances. This test is essential for diagnosing refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Detecting these issues early can lead to corrective measures, such as glasses or contact lenses, improving your daily life.

Tonometry (Eye Pressure Test)

Tonometry is a test that measures the pressure inside your eyes, known as intraocular pressure. It is a key test for glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss. Early detection through tonometry can help slow the progression of glaucoma, preserving vision.

Slit Lamp Examination

The slit lamp is a microscope that allows your eye doctor to examine the structures of your eye under high magnification. During this test, your optometrist examines parts of the eye like the cornea, iris, and lens to identify common conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, and conjunctivitis. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and maintaining good eye health.

Perimetry (Visual Field Test)

The visual field test measures all areas of your eyesight, including your peripheral vision. This test can detect blind spots (scotomas), which can originate from eye diseases such as glaucoma. Identifying issues with your peripheral vision early can help diagnose various eye diseases before they significantly impact your quality of life.

Retinal Examination

A retinal examination involves looking at the back of your eye, where the retina, optic disk, and the underlying layer of blood vessels are located. This test is critical for diagnosing conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection of these conditions can lead to interventions that preserve vision and prevent more severe outcomes.

Pupil Dilation

During this part of the exam, drops are placed in your eyes to widen your pupils. This dilation allows the eye doctor to get a better view of the internal structures of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. This test is crucial for identifying diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
